PROPAGATION – GROWING YOUR OWN PLANTS FROM SCRATCH

I was down at the Werribee Park Heritage Orchard this morning for our usual Friday 9–12 session, and today’s job was pruning cherries. While doing so, we came across several Stallion rootstock suckers popping up—common when roots are disturbed or cut. Rather than waste them, we turned them into opportunity.
We cut the suckers into pencil-thick lengths to make cuttings, and then we prepared scion wood (short lengths of desired cherry varieties from pruning) and grafted them onto the rootstock cuttings. If I get a good cambium connection (where the plant’s ‘plumbing’ lines up), the cuttings will strike roots and we’ll have brand new trees growing before long.
It’s a beautiful and rewarding process. Whether it’s cuttings, grafting, aerial layering, division, or sowing seeds, propagation lets you turn one plant into many. It’s cost-effective, deeply satisfying, and a fundamental skill in any RegenEdible garden.
This Monday night at 7pm, I’m running an online Propagation Workshop where I’ll walk you through exactly how to do all of this. I’ll show step-by-step methods, what materials you need, and those all-important 1% tips that make the difference between success and frustration. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your success rate, I’d love you to join.
If you can’t make it live, don’t worry—a recording is automatically sent to all registered attendees.
